The legendary Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon achieved a historic milestone by becoming only the fourth spinner in cricket history to claim 500 Test wickets. Lyon reached this landmark with the dismissal of Faheem Ashraf on Sunday at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Lyon's journey to his 500th wicket involved a patient wait in the second innings, as he secured this feat during his 7th over after Australia's pacers had already dominated the top and middle-order of the opposing team.

Nathan Lyon achieved an illustrious milestone by becoming the third Australian bowler, alongside Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, to reach 500 Test wickets. Starting the Test match with 496 wickets to his name, Lyon added three more scalps in the first innings, dismissing Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, and Aamer Jamal. Despite his efforts, Lyon fell short of reaching the milestone in the first innings, as Travis Head took the final wicket of Shaheen Shah Afridi to wrap up the Pakistan team.

The star Australian off spinner has found significant success against England and India in Test cricket, with 110 and 121 wickets against them, respectively, out of his total of 500 wickets. Achieving this milestone in 123 Test matches, he ranks as the fifth fastest among the eight bowlers who have accomplished this feat.

Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to this achievement from Lyon;

R Ashwin has been one of his great coaches, says Lyon

Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record as the fastest bowler to reach this milestone, achieving it in just 87 Test matches. Following him are Anil Kumble (105 matches), Shane Warne, and Glenn McGrath (both at 108 matches). In addition to this, Lyon also reflected on the privilege of nearing 500 wickets. He even acknowledged India's R Ashwin as one of his influential coaches in his cricketing career.

"You look at Ashwin, he's a world-class bowler and somebody I've watched closely from the start of his career We've gone head-to-head many times in different conditions around the world. I've got nothing but respect for Ashwin and the way he's gone about it," Lyon said on the eve of the Perth Test against Pakistan, as quoted by cricket.com.au.
