Rafael Nadal created history on Sunday as he went on to win his 21st Grand Slam. Against all odds, the legend won the Australian Open 2022 title. It is to be noted that he was struggling with his fitness a few months back.
However, Nadal produced one of the most exceptional performances at Melbourne Park as he finally managed to get his redemption at this venue. In a match that lasted for five hours and 24 minutes, the Spaniard beat Danii Medvedev 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in a five-set thriller to win only his 2nd ever Australian Open title, and the first one since 2009. He also went past Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer's tally of 20 Grand Slam titles (20).
Thus, he is the first man to breach the magic figure of 21 Grand Slams. Both, Roger Federer, as well as Novak Djokovic, took to social media to appreciate Nadal for creating history.
“What a match! To my friend and great rival @rafaelnadal. Heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles. A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion.” read Roger Federer's caption.
“Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world. I am proud to share this era with you and honoured to play a role in pushing you to achieve more. As you have done for me for the past 18 years. I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one!" his caption further read.

In the meanwhile, Djokovic also took to Twitter to congratulate Nadal on winning the Australian Open 2022 title. An important point to be noted is that the Serbian was unable to participate in the tournament. Djokovic also praised women’s champion Ashleigh Barty and the runners-up of both categories (Danielle Collins and Daniil Medvedev).
“Congratulations to @RafaelNadal for 21st GS. Amazing achievement. Always impressive fighting spirit that prevailed another time. Enhorabuena," read his Tweet.
