Whenever India and South Africa play Test Cricket, it becomes a special occasion for both teams and their fans. Over the years, many batters have given their best during the series between the two sides.
Names such as Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla, Rahul Dravid, and many more have created history at various times. As a new series beckons, many fans will hope newer records are created by the players.
In this article, we take a closer look at the top five century makers during the India versus South Africa Test Series.
5- Mohammad Azharuddin – India – Four centuries
The former Indian skipper seemed to have a special affinity towards the South African bowlers. During the 1996 Kolkata Test, Mohammad Azharuddin scored a quick-fire ton. A few weeks later during the 1997 Cape Town Test match, Azhar yet again hounded the South Africans.
Adding 222 run-stand with skipper Sachin Tendulkar the elegant batter from Hyderabad raced to another century. Interestingly, Azharuddin played his final test against South Africa in Bangalore and scored a century.
4- Hashim Amla – South Africa – Five centuries
The Indian-origin batter was a thorn in the flesh of many Indian bowlers during his playing career. Hashim Amla seemed to feast on the Indian bowling, especially in the Test format. During the 2010 tour of India, Amla had scores of 253, 114, and 127* from the three innings he batted. The Indian bowlers always found the stylish right-handed batter tough to dismiss as Amla seemed to bring his best game forward.
3- Virender Sehwag – India – Five Centuries
There is no doubt that Virender Sehwag was India’s best opening batter since the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. The right-handed batter took the attack to the opposition and treated the longest format of the game as a T20 match. Sehwag made his Test debut versus South Africa in 2001 and made a century in his first innings. His best score of 319 also came against South Africa in Chennai during the 2008 Test Series. The 45-year-old has scored 5 tons against the Proteas in just 20 innings.
2- Sachin Tendulkar – India – Seven Centuries
The best batter the world has ever seen, Sachin Tendulkar has had his battles against the South Africans. His record 50th century came in trying circumstances against South Africa. Sachin Tendulkar incidentally scored his 51st and final century against the Proteas during the Cape Town test in early 2011. With 7 Centuries from 45 Innings, Sachin Tendulkar is number two in the list.
1- Jacques Kallis – South Africa – Seven Centuries
Considered one of the most complete cricketers ever produced, Jacques Kallis was a true master of the game. The 48-year-old played his final Test innings versus India and scored 115 to help his side win the game in Durban. Jacques Kallis has hit 7 centuries versus India in just 31 innings to head this list.
