Earlier in the day Temba Bavuma decided to bowl first after winning the toss. The toss was delayed by 30 minutes as overnight rains had left damp spots on the ground. Nandre Burger made his Test debut as Lungi Ngidi was ruled out for the home team.

Prasidh Krishna made his Test debut with Mukesh Kumar missing out on the playing XI. It came to light that Ravichandran Ashwin was playing the game with Ravindra Jadeja missing out. The last few overseas tours have seen Jadeja get the starting spot in the XI instead of the veteran spinner.

Team India lost yet another toss as Rohit Sharma and his team were asked to bat first. The Indian skipper revealed the reason behind star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja not being included in the team.

Speaking at the toss, the Indian skipper said “Ravindra Jadeja complained of upper back spasms on the morning of the match. He was not available for selection in the first Test”. Ravichandran Ashwin is set to get a rare start in overseas Test Matches for India. The veteran Indian spinner just needs 11 wickets to reach the 500-wicket mark.

It was an overcast day in Centurion with the start getting delayed due to overnight rain. Rohit Sharma said during the toss “We are quite aware of the conditions. We have been here a few times. We do understand the challenges of batting first with the overhead conditions and the grass, but the guys are up for the challenge. Every time we come here, we come with high hopes. We’ve come close in the last two tours. We are pretty confident with our squad.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal was out for 17 when Burger got his maiden wicket caught behind by Kyle Verreynne. Shubman Gill feathered a ball down the leg side to give the wicket-keeper his 2nd catch and Burger his second scalp of the morning.
