KL Rahul is playing his first Test match as a specialist wicketkeeper for the first time for India. Despite playing nearly a decade in the test format the 31-year-old has had to make this transition. On the eve of the game, Rohit Sharma was speaking about KL Rahul and his wicket-keeping future.

Young Ishan Kishan is in India after he pulled out of the Test Series. The 25-year-old had claimed mental fatigue as the reason behind this move. Ishan Kishan has played just two Tests for India having made his debut during the West Indies series.

KS Bharat is now with the Indian side and will be the backup for KL Rahul. The 30-year-old made his India debut earlier this year versus Australia. While KS Bharat is rated highly as a keeper, his bat hasn’t done the talking as yet. With KL Rahul set to bat in the middle-order the batting order also is setting for a new look with greater depth.

Ahead of the first Test in Centurion, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was in conversation with the journalists. The 36-year-old was asked to give his views on KL Rahul taking up the role of a wicket-keeper in the longest format of the game. The 31-year-old has been keeping wickets for India regularly in the ODI format in recent times.

Rohit Sharma said “I felt that the way he kept in the World Cup was quite pleasing. He has been working really hard and he himself is quite keen to take up that role as well. He gives us the option to play a solid batter at, 5, 6, or 7, whatever that position may be”

The Indian skipper also said “He has got experience to play in these conditions, came here and got a century last time. He opened the innings last time but this around, he will bat in the middle order. In the position he is batting in ODI cricket, we have seen that he does most of the things right”

The 36-year-old ended by saying “He bats and understands the game really well. Obviously an experienced player, he knows exactly what is required at different stages of the game. It gives us a solid balance that is there with an experienced player coming to bat in the middle-order which is good. But I am not sure how long he wants to keep. As of now, he is quite keen to take the role”.
