Paarl Royals have cruised to the top of the SA20 2024 points table with a thumping 7-wicket win and a bonus point against Joburg Super Kings on Wednesday. A Jos Buttler-Wihan Lubbe masterclass made it an easy chase for Royals at the Boland Park. Unbeaten after three games this season, David Miller and Co. are level with Durban Super Giants on 13 points.
Opting to bat first, Super Kings could only manage to score 134-10 despite surviving till the final over. They lost three wickets in quick succession inside the powerplay, including captain Faf du Plessis. Leus du Plooy and Moeen Ali built a brief partnership for the fourth wicket to get them out of trouble. However, the English all-rounder's wicket in the 11th over resulted in a massive collapse for the Kings.
They kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but Du Plooy was fighting alone at one end. The 29-year-old smashed a 43-ball 71 while the rest of his teammates struggled to find any resistance. Lungi Ngidi (3/17) and Obed McCoy (2/31) were the pick of the bowlers for Royals. Tabraiz Shamsi and Andile Phehlukwayo took one wicket each.
Buttler - Lubbe partnership took the game away from Super Kings
In reply, the home team lost Jason Roy in the second over. But his opening partner and compatriot Buttler kept firing at the other end right from the start. South African all-rounder Lubbe also joined in the fun as the duo put on an 80-plus partnership for the second wicket. When Lubbe left the crease after making 39 off 30, the scoreboard read 102-2 in 9.6 overs.
The Super Kings bowlers managed to get rid of their rival skipper Miller in the very next over, but the damage had already been done. Buttler remained unbeaten on 70 off just 37 balls, including 8 fours and 3 sixes. Lizaad Williams, Moeen Ali and Imran Tahir took one wicket each.
Speaking after the match, Player of the Match Buttler said: "Nice to get a few and to contribute to a win. We are really looked after, trying to get away from cricket actually, we are staying in a nice place, lots of golf, paddle-tennis. Captaincy is always a great privilege but the recent past has been a bit tougher, Davy is captaining the team brilliantly and really enjoying being part of the team. The bowlers have been fantastic and executed their plans especially on our homeground."
