In a horrific incident, West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen was reportedly attacked and robbed at gunpoint outside Paarl Royals' team hotel in Johannesburg. Allan is currently playing for Royals in the second season of South Africa's T20 franchise cricket league. Fortunately, the cricketer remained unharmed, but shell-shocked and has also raised questions about player safety in the SA20.
The incident took place after Royals' 5-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SUNE) in the tournament's final league match on Sunday. According to reports, Allen was targeted by armed assailants outside the renowned Sandton Sun Hotel. The 28-year-old was confronted at gunpoint to steal valuables including his phone and bag.
Several sources from Cricket West Indies (CWI), Paarl Royals (PR) and SA20 confirmed the incident and maintained that the Windies star is doing fine. West Indies head coach Andre Coley is also reported to have approached Allen on behalf of the board.
Our head coach Andre Coley, also hailing from Jamaica, reached out to Fabian. Contact was successfully established through Obed McCoy (another West Indies international). He is fine. CSA (Cricket South Africa) and his team, Paarl Royals, could share more details if there are any," a CWI official told Cricbuzz.
How have Royals and Allen fared in SA20 2024 so far?
Royals lost their last league match to SUNE, but they have already qualified for the playoffs after finishing third in the points table. Led by David Miller, the team finished with five wins from 10 games, 22 points and a net run rate of -0.544. They have had a great start to their campaign, losing just one of their first 7 matches. However, they lost four straight games to dent their confidence before the playoffs.
As for Allen, the all-rounder has not been at his best this season. From 8 matches, he scored 38 runs at an average of 7.60 and a strike rate of 140.74, with a top score of 17 not out. He has picked up only 2 wickets at an economy rate of 8.87. Allen will next seen in action when PR takes on Joburg Super Kings in the Eliminator at Wanderers Stadium on Wednesday, February 7.
