India did not have a good start to their innings against Sri Lanka in the ongoing match in the ODI World Cup 2023. After being asked to bat first, India lost Rohit Sharma in just the second ball of the match. Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka bowled a peach of a delivery to dismiss the Indian opener for just 4 runs. It sent shockwaves in the Indian dugout.
As Rohit got out, Virat stepped in and had some nervy moments in the middle. Dushmantha Chameera troubled Virat a lot in the first few overs of the match. Mumbai's wicket had some assistance for the pacers, who got the ball to seam into the right-handers. Madushanka also troubled both Virat and Gill in the first few overs of the match in Wankhede Stadium.
After the first few overs, the wicket settled in and became easy to bat on. In the process, Virat got a kick on and hit some boundaries. Despite surviving some close calls, Virat continued and looked at having a big knock. After the early spell from the duo of Chameera and Madushanka, Sri Lanka got the first change in the form of Kasun Rajitha, who offered some freebies to the batters.
Virat Kohli pokes Angelo Mathews
As a second-change bowler, Angelo Mathews was introduced to the attack. The experienced campaigner got the outswinger going even towards the later part of the Powerplay overs. As Mathews came into the attack, Virat tried to be a bit funny with him. Virat hit Mathews' ball and tried to take a single. As Virat was returning to the non-striker's end, he poked his bat on Mathews' back, who was returning to his run-up.
It was not observed by many and went missing till some of the fans recognized it and started sharing it on social media. Mathews did not reply to Virat and continued his return to the run-up. Since then, Virat went on to revive the Indian innings after the early blip. Along with Shubman Gill, Virat framed a good partnership for the second wicket.
