India got to a dominant position straightaway in the semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023 against New Zealand. After winning the toss, India opted to bat first on a good batting surface. India made the most out of the conditions. It was Rohit Sharma who started the Indian innings on a fiery note. The Indian captain raced away to 47(29), which helped India to get a blazing start.
For the first wicket, Gill and Rohit posted 71 runs, which came in a quick time. In his stay in the middle, Rohit entertained the crowd with his aggressive batting. The Indian captain hit 4 fours and sixes each in his short stay. It allowed the batters around him to take their time and acclimatize to the conditions well. As it turned out, the pitch showed that slower ones weren't easy to be hit.
Rohit got out the same way. The Indian opener went behind a slower one from Tim Southee, which led to his end in the middle. The Kiwi pacer took the pace off and bowled away from Rohit's hitting arc. The 36-year-old did not read the ball and tried to loft it over the ropes.
Kane Williamson reviews a decision against Virat Kohli
The lack of fluency led to the end of Rohit's stay in the middle. But it gave a big advantage to India to thrive on the aggressive start they got. But it allowed Virat to start his innings. The start of Virat was not the most fluent ones. In just his second ball of the match, Virat had a nervous moment, as Kane Williamson reviewed a LBW decision against Virat. It led to nervous moments among fans.
Anushka Sharma, who was seated in the stands, was seen nervous as well. As it turned out, the ball took an inside edge of Virat's bat, which saved the day for him. Southee's ball came back in and probably would have gone on to miss the stumps or just clip the bails off to be declared the umpires call.
