India got a perfect start against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023. On a slow pitch in Chennai, the new ball bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj were effective. Both the pacers were economical and Bumrah provided the much-needed breakthrough and sent Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion. It was Virat Kohli's catch that made the headlines.
The star cricketer claimed a fantastic catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh, who is a dangerous batter. Virat had to reach out for the catch, which was fairly far from him. For a slip fielder, such catches are difficult to grab. It was Bumrah who set up the batter by bowling outside off deliveries and asked him to make a move. The runs had dried up and Marsh was yet to score a run.
Bumrah bowled a slightly back-of-length delivery, compared to the good-length deliveries. The line was a bit closer to the batter. Marsh thought it to be coming into himself, which was a misjudgement. Instead, the ball was around the fifth stump line and bounced a bit more. It trapped the batter completely. Bumrah found the outside edge of the batter.
Virat Kohli's fantastic catch to go past Anil Kumble
The ball travelled to the slips region, where Kohli sensed the opportunity. Kohli had to fly towards his left to catch the ball. The 34-year-old did exactly that and caught the ball in a fantastic way. It was a lightening catch and the fans enjoyed it a lot. It lit up the stadium and set the perfect tone for the match.
By taking the catch, Virat went past the former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble in a unique World Cup record. Before the match, both Virat and Kumble were the fielders with joint highest catches in the ODI World Cup. With the catch of Marsh, Virat surpassed Kumble and became the fielder with the most number of catches for India in the ODI World Cup. Virat now has 15 catches in the ODI World Cup, compared to 14 from Kumble.
