A remarkable performance by the Indian bowlers put the Men in Blue in the driver's seat after the first innings. The visitors were going well till the 30th over when Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan stood firm at the crease. However, pace sensation Mohammed Siraj provided a massive breakthrough with the wicket of the Pakistan skipper and triggered a collapse in the opposition.
Pakistan scrambled in front of the Indian bowling unit and were bowled out for just 191 runs. Considering the start they got after being asked to bat first, the Men in Green will be disappointed by seeing the scoreboard. Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first in a high-octane encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, both their openers got off to a steady start as the Indian pacers could not trouble them much.
Siraj leaked runs in the opening overs, but it was only through him that India got the first breakthrough, removing last-match centurion Abdullah Shafique in the 8th over. A few overs later, vice-captain Hardik Pandya sent another opener, Imam-ul-Haq, back to the pavilion. Rizwan and Babar then steadied the ship for Pakistan with a brilliant partnership.
They started off cautiously as the Indian bowlers were wreaking, but turned things around in quick time by scoring boundaries at regular intervals. A big total was on the cards when these two were going comfortably with a fine half-century partnership. But India gave a strong counterattack to gain control back.
Siraj breaks the dangerous Rizwan-Babar partnership and opens the floodgates of wickets
Soon after Babar completed his 29th ODI half-century, Siraj got rid of him with a stunning delivery that saw his off-stump rattles. Kuldeep Yadav sent Saud Shakeel and Iftikhar Ahmed packing in the same over (33rd) and Pakistan smelled danger. India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah returned to the attack and dismissed Pakistan's in-form batter, Rizwan and all-rounder Shadab Khan in quick succession.
There were no good contributions from their lower middle-order and tail-enders, resulting in Pakistan being bowled out for less than 200 runs. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja wrap up the first innings in 42.5 overs. It was the third time in a World Cup that five bowlers have taken two wickets each in an innings. From 155-2 at one stage, the Men in Green crumbled to 191 all-out in the span of 13 overs.
