In a crucial World Cup match, England's captain, Jos Buttler, won the toss and chose to bat first, aiming to exploit favourable batting conditions. The game started with an almost dream-like start for Sri Lanka when Dilshan Madushanka almost got a wicket on the very first ball by dismissing Jonny Bairstow's leg-before-wicket.

Following this initial setback, Bairstow and Dawid Malan (28) managed to stitch together a 45-run partnership for the first wicket in 39 balls. Angelo Mathews came to Sri Lanka's rescue, taking the first wicket for England upon his return to the ODI team after a four-month absence by inducing an edge from Malan to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. Malan's dismissal marked the beginning of a downward spiral for the English team. Angelo Mathews played a pivotal role in securing the second breakthrough, dismissing Joe Root through a run-out. Lahiru Kumara further added to England's misery by claiming the valuable wickets of Jos Buttler (8), Liam Livingstone (1), and Ben Stokes (43). As a result, England found themselves in a dire situation at 137/8 and was eventually dismissed for a paltry 156 runs. Lahiru Kumara was the star with the ball for Sri Lanka as he took 3/35 in 7 overs.

In their pursuit of the target, Sri Lanka faced a rocky start, losing their first two wickets with just 23 runs on the board. The credit for these crucial breakthroughs goes to David Willey, who dismissed the dangerous duo of Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis. Unfortunately for England, no other bowlers were able to make significant contributions.

However, Sri Lanka's fortunes took a turn for the better as Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama put on a brilliant batting display. They formed an unbeaten partnership of 137 runs for the second wicket, ultimately leading their team to a convincing 8-wicket victory over the English side. Nissanka played a crucial role, scoring 77 runs off 83 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes. Meanwhile, Samarawickrama contributed with a knock of 65 runs from just 54 deliveries, featuring 7 fours and 1 six. Their exceptional partnership proved to be the difference-maker in the match.
