The match number 26 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw the South African clashing against the Pakistan team. This game for Pakistan was a do or die clash and they literally turned up in such a manner. The match went down to the wire but it was South Africa who hold on their nerves and won the match by one wicket. With this win South Africa have jumped to top spot and on the other end Pakistan, with this loss are virtually knocked out of the ODI World Cup 2023.
Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam won the toss and chose to bat, but the team's openers didn't provide the strong start they had hoped for. Both Imam-ul-Haq (12) and Abdullah Shafique (9) appeared promising but succumbed to well-executed bowling by Jansen in the middle. Rizwan, too, had a decent start with the bat but failed to make the most of his good beginning. Unfortunately, he couldn't convert his innings into a substantial one, being dismissed for 31 runs from 27 balls by Gerald Coetzee, who had him caught by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.
However, skipper Babar played well but was dismissed for 50 courtesy of brilliant bowling from Tabraiz Shamsi. But the game changing partnership for Pakistan was between Saud Shakeel and Shadab Khan. The duo stitched a partnership of 84 runs. Meanwhile, Shakeel completed a well complied half century. Shadab looked brilliant knock of 43 helped Pakistan to register a formidable total of 270 runs.
Aiden Markram shines with bat for Proteas
The Pakistani openers showed promise but had difficulty dealing with Jensen's short deliveries. Shafique was the first to depart, scoring 9 runs off 17 balls, followed by Imam, who made 12 runs. Babar and Rizwan combined for a 48-run partnership before Rizwan was dismissed for 31 runs, reaching 2000 runs in ODI cricket. Babar reached a fifty but was out the very next ball. Saud Shakeel and Shadab Khan then forged an 84-run partnership to ensure a total of over 250. Shakeel contributed a brisk 52 off 52 balls, and Shadab Khan added 43 runs off 36 deliveries. Shamsi claimed four wickets in his ten overs.
In response, Bavuma and Quinton de Kock got off to a strong start, scoring runs quickly. However, Afridi, after dismissing de Kock for 24 runs, made a comeback and took two wickets, including Aiden Markram, who played a brilliant innings of 91 runs. Ultimately it all came down Keshav Maharaj and Shamsi to guide South Africa home. The Proteas ultimately secured a nail-biting one-wicket victory. Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to this loss;
