On Wednesday, India beat New Zealand by 70 runs in the first semifinal of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. In the high-scoring game, India's all-around performance helped them cruise into the semifinals. However, before the marquee game, there was a controversy over the pitch in Wankhede.
Before the marquee semifinal game, media sources suggested that the Apex Cricket Council was not thrilled about the semi-final taking place on a used surface rather than a brand-new one. However, statements from the Apex Cricket Council and the Indian Cricket Board clarified the situation and dispelled any doubts that might have been expressed. Meanwhile, star India battalion Shubman Gill was asked about the controversy.
While speaking with the media after India triumphed over New Zealand, he said that he didn't know about the issue. He said, "I just found out that there was a controversy. You told me. Kya controversy thi? (What was the controversy?" It's worth noting that despite posting a massive total of 397/4 in 50 overs, New Zealand gave up a great fight. However, they fell 70 runs short of the target.
"We knew it was going to be challenging", says Shubman Gill
Further speaking about the game, Shubman Gill revealed that the team knew it would be a tough task to win the game. "Honestly, I think we knew it was going to be challenging, especially under lights. Once the new ball gets a bit old, it is a bit difficult for bowlers here to contain runs. So, we knew it was going to be challenging, but what was important for us was to just keep bowling in the areas where we wanted to bowl and wait for them to make a mistake. And that's what we did," says Gill.
"And I think at one point, Daryl and Kane's partnership was looking a bit challenging with such big scores. But, you know, with a couple of wickets here and there, you're always in the game," he further added. It's worth noting that India will face the winner of the match between South Africa and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19.
