The Rohit Sharma-led side's next assignment is in Delhi, where they will face Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, October 11. Ahead of their second World Cup encounter, the Indian Cricket Board provided a crucial update on Gill, confirming that the 24-year-old will not be travelling to Delhi with the Indian team. He will be under the supervision of the medical team in Chennai, the board added.

“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team," the Indian Cricket Board said in a statement.

Shubman Gill has been a vital clog in India's ODI setup this year. Currently No. 2 in men's ODI batting rankings, Gill has amassed 1,230 runs from 20 matches at a staggering average of 72.35. Notably, he was the highest run-scorer in the 2023 Asia Cup, in which India were crowned champions for the record eighth time.

In Gill's absence, it was Ishan Kishan who opened alongside Rohit Sharma in their clash against Australia. The southpaw, who has been in good form recently, failed to shine on his World Cup debut. He was dismissed for a golden duck by Mitchell Starc in the first over of the second innings. However, India managed to win by six wickets despite an early collapse, thanks to the record partnership between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

Here's how fans reacted to reports that Shubman Gill would miss the match against Afghanistan:
