Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan came under scanner for his 'Timed-Out' appeal against former Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews. During the 38th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, the former champions were asked to bat first. After losing their fourth wicket at 135 runs, Mathews came to bat. However, due to a helmet malfunction, he wasn't ready to face his first ball.

Meanwhile, this led to Hasan appealing for 'Timed-Out'. In the end, as per the rules, the former Sri Lanka skipper was given out and it caused a controversy. During the second innings, Angelo took the wicket of Hasan and the former gave a send to the Bangladesh player by gesturing towards his wrists. After winning the game by three wickets, the Bangladesh skipper talked about his reason for appealing.

"One of our fielders came to me and said, 'If you appeal now, he will be out, if you are serious'. Then I appealed and the umpire asked me whether I was serious and whether I was going to take it back or not. I said no if it is in the rule if it's out, I [won't] take it back," Shakib said at the post-match presentation after Bangladesh won by three wickets.

"It is in the laws. I don't know if it is right or wrong. But I felt like I was at war. I had to take decision to make sure my team wins and whatever I had to do, I had to do. Right or wrong - there will be debates. But if it's in the rules, I don't mind taking those chances," said Shakib.

Notably, both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are fighting for the Champions Trophy 2025 qualification. Teams that will finish at top eight excluding Pakistan will qualify for the playoffs.
