Despite delivering a strong performance against Sri Lanka, scoring 82 runs and taking two wickets, Shakib became the center of attention due to the 'Time-Out' controversy. He received criticism from various quarters for his decision not to withdraw his appeal. As per the team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan, Shakib sustained the injury in the initial phase of his batting innings.

"Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game, which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab," Bayjedul said.

Bangladesh still face scare of missing out on Champions Trophy 2025

Shakib's injury marks a tumultuous 24 hours for him. During Bangladesh's three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, he initiated the appeal that led to Angelo Mathews becoming the first batter to be dismissed as 'timed out' in international cricket. After the game, Shakib compared his experience on the field to being in a battle. Although Bangladesh is already out of the semifinal contention, their qualification for the Champions Trophy 2025 is still at stake. Shakib's absence is likely to dampen their spirits.

Bangladesh has suffered six losses in their eight World Cup matches, eliminating them from the semifinal race. However, they still have a chance to secure a spot in the Champions Trophy 2025, as a top-eight finish on the table would guarantee that. Shakib himself had a less-than-stellar World Cup, with three single-digit scores in the six innings he played before his Player-of-the-Match performance of 82 against Sri Lanka.

Najmul Hossain Shanto is expected to lead Bangladesh in their final World Cup 2023 match. They will face Australia on November 11th in Pune, aiming to conclude a disappointing campaign on a positive note.
