Bangladesh has had a poor campaign in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. After starting the tournament on a good note with a win against Afghanistan, nothing has gone well with Bangladesh. In their last 5 matches, Bangladesh has lost all the 5 matches. The Asian side has lost to England, New Zealand, India, South Africa, and the Netherlands in the period.
Bangladesh is yet to face Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Australia in the tournament. But their campaign seems to be nearly done and dusted. But it is their way of play that has not gone well with the fans of the sport. Their most recent loss against the Netherlands showed how disappointed the fans were with the team. Even before the end of the match, the fans started to leave the stadium.
The performance of Bangladesh was rather awful against the Netherlands. They were reduced to 70/6 at one stage and dismissed for just 142 runs while chasing a target of 230 runs. The fact that the Netherlands comfortably won the match against Bangladesh did not go well with the fans, who booed the team and left the stadium midway.
You don't know what an individual has in his mind - Shakib Al Hasan
Speaking about the reaction of the fans after the match, Shakib accepted the negative reception from the fans. The Bangladesh captain felt that the crowd had all the reasons to be angry with the players. Further, when asked about the reason behind their poor performance in the tournament, Shakib said that the controversy with Tamim Iqbal probably affected the mood of the dressing room.
"It might have affected the team. It's not unusual. You don't know what an individual has in his mind but I am not disagreeing with the fact that (the controversy) might have affected us," said Shakib. It is interesting to note that Tamim announced his retirement from cricket following Bangladesh's loss against Afghanistan in the second ODI of the bilateral series earlier this year. But he later took back his retirement and was surprisingly left out of the ODI WC 2023 squad.
