In the 23rd match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, South Africa won the toss and elected to bat, but they faced early setbacks, losing Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen quickly. Shoriful removed Reeza, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed Dussen. Both the batters looked regardless of the time they spent on the crease on a pitch which was batting-friendly.

However, a crucial 131-run partnership between Quinton De Kock and Aiden Markram for the third wicket provided a significant boost to South Africa. In their previous fixture at the same ground, the South African batter managed to score 399 in the allocated 50 overs. This was an essential encounter for the team as they were up against the defending champions. In addition to it, they even won the match by a huge 227-run margin.
