The match number 41 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw the 2019 runner-up, New Zealand taking on Sri Lanka. Both teams had different intentions at the time of entering the game. New Zealand were looking to win the game and cement their position in the semi-final of the tournament whereas, on the other hand, the Sri Lanka team were losing to solidify their chances so that they could qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025.
In addition to this, the match was also essential for the Pakistan and Afghanistan teams who were banking on New Zealand’s loss so that both these teams could have a chance for qualification by winning their last games respectively. Eventually, the match turned out to be one-side traffic as New Zealand registered a thumping win over Sri Lanka by five wickets. Most importantly the New Zealand team won the game by 100 balls to spare. With this win the Kiwis have almost sealed their Semi Final berth as both Pakistan and Afghanistan will have to win with a miraculous margin if they need to surpass New Zealand on the points table. It is also to be remembered that either of these three teams is likely to play India in semi final of World Cup 2023.
