But the match turned out to be the second upset of this edition of the World Cup. The match started with South African skipper Temba Bavuma winning the toss and elected to bowl first in a rain-curtailed match. The match was reduced to 43 overs a side. The Proteas did not have the best possible start as they kept on losing wickets at regular junctures of the game courtesy of some hostile fast bowling from the South African pacers. The impact was so that the Netherlands side was reduced to 82/5 in the 21st over.

Citing the chance of wrapping things up, skipper Bavuma called his pacers for another spell and the pacers also responded positively claiming the wickets of Teja Nidamanuru (20) and Logan van Beek (10). But the Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards hung on to one end and built valuable partnerships with Roelof van der Merwe (29). The duo stitched together a partnership of 64 runs in just 36 deliveries. Similarly, once van der Merwe was dismissed skipper Edwards was joined in by young Aryan Dutt who played a blinder of a knock scoring 23 runs in just 9 balls. Eventually, with the help of late cameos and the resilience of skipper Edwards (78), the Netherlands side managed to score 245 runs in their allocated 43 overs.

South Africa’s top order crumbled under quality spin

In pursuit of the mediocre target, the South African batting order never looked like they were playing like the side we have seen in the tournament so far. The Netherlands spinner spun a web around the South African top order who had no answers. The impact was such that South Africans were reduced to 89/5 in the nineteenth over.

The left-arm orthodox spinner van der Merwe was the wrecker-in-chief who took two wickets in the early batting collapse of the South African team. The Proteas never looked like they were in the chase as they kept on losing wickets. There was never a partnership that was built in the game as none of the batters tried to replicate what Edwards did for the Netherlands. The star of the show for the Netherlands was Logan van Beek who took three wickets. Paul van Meekeran, van der Merwe, and Bas de Leede all shared two wickets each.
