In the scorching conditions of the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai during Pakistan's crucial World Cup 2023 match against South Africa, things heated up as Marco Jansen and Mohammad Rizwan engaged in a face-off. It was Rizwan who attempted to defuse the situation as the battle between bat and ball intensified early in the game.

The incident unfolded in the 7th over when Marco Jansen missed a difficult return catch opportunity. The wicketkeeper batter, facing his first delivery of the innings, fell victim to a slower delivery from the tall left-arm pacer, chipping the ball to the right of the bowler. Jansen dove to his right, but the ball slipped out of his grasp and escaped for a boundary.

In response, Rizwan tried to regain the upper hand by taking an aggressive swing at a length delivery. The ball caught the top edge of his bat and flew to the third-man boundary. Jansen expressed his frustration at the boundary, leading to a verbal exchange between the two players.

The umpires had to intervene to calm the situation. Jansen, fueled by the exchange, bowled a fast-length delivery that went through to the wicketkeeper. Rizwan chose not to play the delivery, prompting Jansen to approach him and exchange a few more words, suggesting that he should have attempted a shot at that delivery. However, Rizwan diffused the tension by offering a smile on the field.

Pakistan did not have an ideal start

After winning the toss, the Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first. But it was not the start that the Pakistan team would have wanted from their openers. Both the opening batters, Imam-ul-Haq (12) and Abdullah Shafique (9) were looking good in the the middle but fell to a well-planned bowling from Jansen. Rizwan too had a good start with the bat but was not able to capitalize on the star he got.

However, Rizwan couldn’t go big in his innings as he was dismissed for 31 (27) by Gerald Coetzee who made him edge on straight to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. Upon dismissing the Pakistan batter, Coetzee was seen charged up as he celebrated the dismissal aggressively. Having said that both skipper Babar and Iftikhar Ahmed are looking good in the middle with a partnership of 43 runs till now.
