One final league tomorrow and then the 2023 ODI World Cup are onto the knock-out week. More than a month into the tournament, we have already witnessed records for the highest team score, highest run chase and fastest century being broken. As the quadrennial event nears its business end, fans are expecting more exhilarating cricketing action from the batters and bowlers.
South Africa's Quinton de Kock is currently the highest run-scorer in the World Cup with 591 runs and four centuries. Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell took the record for the fastest century from Proteas batter Aiden Markram with a 40-ball century against the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the record for the highest individual score in the World Cup is still held by New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, although few players have managed to come close in this edition.
In this article, we look at the highest run scorers in the 2023 ODI World Cup
5. Devon Conway (152)
New Zealand opener Devon Conway registered his highest ODI score against England in the tournament opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The encounter was expected to be high octane as the two finalists of the 2019 World Cup clash. However, it turned out to be a one-sided affair as New Zealand won by 9 wickets. Conway scored an unbeaten 152 off 121 balls while chasing 282. His innings included 19 fours and 3 sixes.
4. David Warner (163)
After being asked to bat first by Pakistan, Bengaluru's Chinnaswammy Stadium witnessed absolute carnage from the Australian openers. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh stitched a 259-run partnership with both scoring centuries. Warner was aggressive right from the start and the southpaw went on to smash 163 runs off 124 balls, including 14 fours and 9 sixes. The five-time champions registered a 62-run victory.
3. Quinton de Kock (174)
De Kock's 174 off 140 balls against Bangladesh was one of his four hundreds in the tournament that put him on the top of the leading run-scorers list. After opting to bat first in Mumbai's Wankhed Stadium, de Kock provided a slow but steady start for the Proteas. Once completing the three-digit score, the southpaw went all guns blazing and smashed 174 off just 140 balls. His brutal hitting included 15 fours and 7 sixes. South Africa won the game by a massive 149 runs.
2. Mitchell Marsh (177)
Australia's Mitchell Marsh is the latest on the list as he recorded his highest ODI score in their last league match against Bangladesh. Chasing a target of 307 on a batting deck, the right-hander grabbed his opportunity with both hands ahead of the knockout stage. With 17 fours and 9 sixes, the Aussie power-hitter amassed 177 runs in just 132 balls to take his team home in 44.4 overs.
1. Glenn Maxwell (201)
Second fastest ODI double hundred, highest score for a non-opener in ODIs, highest individual score in an ODI run-chase; Maxwell's double hundred against Afghanistan was not just a record-breaking knock in this edition. In fact, the Aussie all-rounder played one of the greatest-ever knock in the 50-over format. The five-time champions were on the verge of losing to 'minnows' when they were at 97/7 at one stage. The right-hander, who was struggling with pain and cramps, held the hands of skipper Pat Cummins to pull off an unbelievable chase. Maxi amassed 21 fours and 10 sixes to complete 201 off 128 balls.
