Match 21 of the 2023 ODI World Cup 2023 between India and New Zealand witnessed a rare incident. One of the finest fielders of all time, Ravindra Jadeja dropped an easy catch. Usually, when a fielder drops a catch or misfields it doesn't grab the headlines, but when someone like Jadeja misses the sitter it's something fans can't believe.

Had Jadeja managed to take the catch, New Zealand would have been in dire straits. Indian pacers got off to a good start after captain Rohit Sharma elected to field first at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday. Jasprit Bumrah started with a maiden over to Devon Conway and put the Kiwi star under pressure early on.

Muhammed Siraj gave Team India the early lead by dismissing the in-form Conway in the fourth over. Both continued to pile on the pressure and when the scoreboard read 19-1 in 8 overs, Rohit brought Mohammed Shami into the attack. Shami, playing his first match of the 2023 ODI World Cup, dismissed Will Young on the first ball.

The veteran pacer would have claimed one more wicket in his second over, but Jadeja had a very rare bad day at the office. Kiwi left-hander Rachin Ravindra cut a ball towards backward point where Jadeja was patrolling. The ball came at him quickly but at a very comfortable height. Jadeja couldn't believe it, the team couldn't believe it and so did the fans.

Prominent cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle was also stunned to see Jadeja drop a catch. The 'Voice of Cricket' took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) handle to express his disbelief. "I didn't think I would ever say that Jadeja has cost India in the field," Bhogle tweeted.

As he mentioned, Rachin's drop catch proved costly as the southpaw went on to smash a brilliant half-century. The No.3 batter was at 12 when Jadeja gave him a lifeline. He made a 150-plus partnership with Daryl Mitchell before leaving the crease. Later, in 33.3 overs, Mohammed Shami himself took the wicket of Rachin (75 off 87), with Shubman Gill taking a comfortable at the boundary line.
