In the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup, India and England squared off in Match 29 on October 29 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Having said that the match turned out to be a one-sided affair as Indian team stream rolled England side by 100 runs. England won the toss and opted to field, placing India in the unusual position of setting a target. England's decision paid early dividends as they quickly dismissed Shubman Gill (9), Virat Kohli (0), and Shreyas Iyer (4), leaving India at just 40 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. With their backs against the wall at 40/3, the Indian captain and his former opening partner KL Rahul joined forces to stabilize the innings.

The pair established a solid 91-run partnership for the 4th wicket. Rohit Sharma achieved his second half-century of the tournament. Just when it seemed like India was regaining control, Rahul made an uncharacteristic mistake and departed after scoring 39 runs. Rohit was inching closer to his second century, but his attempt to accelerate the innings resulted in his dismissal as he aimed for a six off Adil Rashid's delivery.

Suryakumar Yadav played a crucial innings, contributing 49 runs from 47 balls, which included 4 fours and 1 six, narrowly missing his first half-century in a World Cup. India concluded their innings with a total of 229 runs within their allotted 50 overs. David Willey was the standout bowler for England, taking 3 wickets, while Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid each claimed 2 wickets.

India pacers steam rolled England’s batting lineup

During their chase, England had a strong start, but it was Jasprit Bumrah who turned the game in India's favor. In a decisive over, Bumrah delivered a double blow by dismissing Dawid Malan and Joe Root on consecutive deliveries. Mohammed Shami also played his part by removing the dangerous pair of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow in his initial two overs.

The spin wizard, Kuldeep Yadav, showcased his exceptional bowling skills by sending the English skipper Jos Buttler back to the pavilion with a superb delivery. However, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone attempted to stabilize the innings, but once again, Shami intervened by dismissing Moeen in the 24th over. Livingstone's struggle with the bat also came to an end in the 30th over.

Just as Shami and Bumrah had initiated the innings with wickets, they concluded it in a similar fashion, taking the final two wickets. Shami ended with 4 wickets to his name, while Bumrah claimed 3 wickets, contributing significantly to India's bowling success.
