Virat Kohli marked his 35th birthday with a special century against South Africa on Sunday. The former Indian skipper scored his 49th ODI century to go level with the great Sachin Tendulkar. Former West Indian pacer Ian Bishop was the first amongst many to wish Virat Kohli on this special day.

India took on South Africa at the famed Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Both teams had already made it to the knock-out stages of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first on what looked like a difficult surface. 

The Eden Gardens was jam-packed as they came out to see Virat Kohli and the unbeaten Indian side. The clash on Sunday was billed as the clash of the heavyweights as both the teams had good firepower with the bat and ball.

Rohit Sharma had given India a great start before falling for 40 runs off just 24 balls. The fall of the Indian skipper got former India Captain Virat Kohli to the crease. There was a massive cheer that went around the ground as Kohli strode onto the wicket.

Right from his first ball Virat Kohli looked in the zone for a huge innings. Nothing seemed to faze the 35-year-old as he played both the seamers and spinners with equal ease. Keshav Maharaj had Virat Kohli in trouble early when he went for a huge appeal but the umpire gave it not out. When the DRS was taken it was seen there was no edge on the bat.

With Virat Kohli on 99, the entire Eden Gardens stood up as the Indian number three took a single from Rabada in the 3rd ball of the 49th over. There was a huge cheer across the stadium as Virat Kohli took off his helmet and thanked the stars.

 India scored 326/5 from their fifty-overs with Virat Kohli not out on 101 off 121 balls with 10 hits to the fence. Shreyas scored his third half-century of the ODI World Cup 2023 and second in succession.

The 28-year-old scored 77 runs from 87 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Ravindra Jadeja used the long handle to score an unbeaten 29 runs off 15 balls with 3 fours and a six. His sole six was against Lungi Ngidi as it travelled far and wide for a 95-meter hit.
