The 2023 ODI World Cup is off to a flying start, with batters dominating the marquee event so far. A total of 10 centuries were scored across the opening eight matches and this has shaken up the Men's ODI batting rankings. The Cricket Governing Body updated the rankings on Wednesday (October 11) and India's batting stalwart Virat Kohli was one of the notable achievers on the chart.
The former India captain climbed two places to the seventh position. Kohli was rewarded for his match-winning half-century against Australia in India's World Cup opener in Chennai on October 8. The right-handed batter stitched a record 165-run partnership with KL Rahul to lead India to a six-wicket win. After losing three early wickets, it was the Kohli-Rahul duo that brought India back into the game.
Kohli, however, could not finish the game as he was dismissed after making 85 off 116 balls. Rahul, on the other hand, stayed till the end of the game and sealed India's victory with a maximum. He missed out on a well-deserved century by just three runs but was rewarded for his sensational 115-ball 97 in the latest ODI rankings. Rahul has returned to the top 20 and is now placed in the 17th position.
South Africans dominate the men's batting rankings
South African opener Quinton de Kock has moved up to No. 6 after his blistering century against Sri Lanka in the ongoing World Cup. Australia's David Warner (5th) and Ireland's Harry Tector (4th) are tied on 729 points, but the former will go higher in the upcoming matches. Meanwhile, South Africa's middle-order batter Rassie van der Dussen (3rd) cemented his spot in the top 5 with a blazing hundred against Sri Lanka.
All-rounder Aiden Markram is another South African player who has benefited from the World Cup heroics. The fastest World Cup centurion climbed 11 spots to move to 21st position. England's Dawid Malan, who scored a 107-ball 140 against Bangladesh, achieved a career-best rating of 711 to be placed at 8th.
