Another dominant display from the Indian Cricket Team - a perfect Diwali gift for their fans! It is the first time in the history of the World Cup that India has won nine matches in a row. They were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals and now cemented their top spot with a massive 160-run win over the Netherlands at the Chinnaswammy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Rohit Sharma, who won the toss and opted to bat first, gave the team another quick-fire start. The Indian skipper and Shubman Gill stitched a 100-run partnership in just 11.5 overs, with both notching up their respective half-centuries. Virat Kohli played as usual and topped the list of leading run scorers with his seventh fifty-plus score of the tournament.
After Kohli's departure, it was Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul's turn to take the Dutch bowlers to the cleaners. Iyer scored his maiden World Cup century (128* off 94 balls) which earned him the Player of the Match award. Notably, it was the first hundred by an Indian middle-order batter in World Cups since Suresh Raina's 110* runs against Zimbabwe at Auckland in the 2015 edition.
However, it was Rahul's blistering knock that saw Team India cross the 400 mark. The 31-year-old registered the second-highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper in the ODI World Cup. The duo added 200-plus runs for the fourth wicket to help India post their second-highest total in the World Cup (410/4).
Kohli, Gill and Suryakumar rolled their arms as Netherlands chase humongous total
Chasing a mammoth target, the Netherlands lost an early wicket of opener Wesley Barresi in the second over. The Dutch batters tried to find some runs but the Indian bowlers took wickets at regular intervals. As it was a walk in the park for Team India, captain Rohit decided to give some overs to Kohli, Gill and Iyer in the middle overs.
Kohli registered his fifth international wicket by dismissing Netherlands captain Scott Edwards. It was his first wicket in the ODI World Cup. Gill and Suryakumar bowled two overs each but failed to take any wickets. Finally, Rohit himself took the ball to wrap up the game. The captain took the wicket of Teja Nidamanuru, who fell after a valiant fifty, and concluded the Netherlands' innings by 250 runs in 47.5 overs.
Here's how fans reacted to India's win over Netherlands:
