In the 2nd semifinal of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, South Africa faces Australia at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In the rain-affected game, South African skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bat. His decision soon came back to haunt his team, as the Australian pacers had a great time with the ball.

In rainy conditions, the ball got a bit extra seam and swing, which helped the Aussies keep South Africa under pressure. Starting with skipper Bavuma, the top three Proteas batters failed to cross a double-digit score. Opener Bavuma was dismissed by Mitchell Starc for a four-ball duck. He was followed by wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, who scored three runs off 14 deliveries.

Soon after his departure, Aiden Markram also threw his wicket as he was dismissed by Starc. On the other end, Josh Hazelwood continued his amazing bowling performance as he dismissed De Kock and Raasie Van der Dussen. Soon, South Africa was crumbling at 44 runs after losing four wickets. However, a sigh of relief came for them when the match was stopped by a sudden rainfall.

What if rain washes off the game between South Africa and Australia?

There are very high chances of rain during the game on Thursday. However, if the match fails to continue today, it will be resumed on Friday as it is a reserve day. But if both teams fail to play at least 20 overs each, the match will be called off. In that case, South Africa will qualify for the finals of the ongoing tournament. Finishing above Australia in the league stage will help them get a place in the finals.

Meanwhile, five-time champion Australia will be looking to continue their dominance against South Africa in the ODI World Cup. Australia have thrashed the Proteas on three occasions in seven World Cup games, and they have faced losses three times too. One game, i.e., the 1999 Semifinals game, was ended in a tie.

Here is how fans react to South Africa's poor batting performance:
