The Match 25 of the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 on October 26, at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium did not turn up well for the defending champions as England faced a devastating defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka, being dismissed for a mere 156 runs. England's captain, Jos Buttler, won the toss and opted to bat first to take advantage of the favorable batting conditions. The game started with Dilshan Madushanka nearly giving Sri Lanka a fantastic start by dismissing Jonny Bairstow leg-before-wicket on the very first ball.

However, they opted not to review the decision, and replays later confirmed Bairstow's dismissal. Following this early setback, openers Bairstow and Dawid Malan (28) managed to put together 45 runs for the first wicket in 39 balls. Angelo Mathews came to Sri Lanka's rescue by taking the first wicket for England on his return to the ODI team after a four-month absence, inducing an edge from Malan to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Malan's dismissal marked the beginning of a downward spiral for the English team. Angelo Mathews played a crucial role in securing the second breakthrough, dismissing Joe Root via a run-out. Lahiru Kumara joined the action and claimed the valuable wickets of Jos Buttler (8), Liam Livingstone (1), and Ben Stokes (43), leaving England in a dire situation at 137/8.

Captain Kusal Mendis demonstrated quick thinking by running out Adil Rashid (2) with a precise throw at the non-striker's end during the 32nd over.

Maheesh Theekshana sealed the deal by stumping Mark Wood in the 34th over, concluding the downfall of the defending champions as they were bowled out for a mere 156 in 33.2 overs. Lahiru Kumara stood out as the top bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming three wickets for 35 runs in 7 overs, while Kasun Rajitha (2/36, 7 overs) and Angelo Mathews (2/14, 5 overs) also secured two wickets each.
