In particular, the South African batters have been dominant with the bat in the tournament. Four of their batters in the Top 5 have hundreds to their name. But one of them, in particular, has made scoring hundred a habit. It is none other than Quinton De Kock.
The Southpaw has been in a sensational form in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. De Kock has been easily the highest run-scorer in the World Cup till now. And it looks as if he is not interested in stopping his run anytime soon. Against New Zealand in Pune, De Kock registered his 4th ton of the tournament to join the elite list of batters. Here are the batters with the most number of hundreds in the single edition of the ODI World Cup.
3. Kumar Sangakkara
The former Sri Lankan batter achieved the feat in the 2015 ODI World Cup. In Australia and New Zealand, the Southpaw took batting to a different level at the biggest cricket stage. Till then, no batter had managed to score more than 3 hundreds in a single edition of the tournament. But Sangakkara scored 4 hundreds in the tournament. More impressively, he hit all 4 of them in 4 consecutive innings!
In the tournament, Sangakkara scored a hundred against Bangladesh, England, Australia, and Scotland respectively. Against Bangladesh, Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 105*(76). Against England, Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 117*(86), chasing a total of 310 runs. Against Australia, he scored 104(107), chasing a mammoth score of 377 runs in Sydney. Against Scotland, Sangakkara scored 124(95).
2. Quinton De Kock
Quinton de Kock is the latest addition to the list of batters with more than 3 hundreds in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. The South African batter has been in sensational form in the ongoing ODI World Cup and has been incredibly consistent. So far in the tournament, the wicketkeeper batter from South Africa has scored hundreds against Sri Lanka, Australia, Bangladesh, and New Zealand respectively.
Against Sri Lanka, De Kock scored 100 runs in 84 balls, which contributed to the highest team total in the history of the ODI World Cup. Against Australia, De Kock scored 109 runs in 106 balls. Against Bangladesh, de Kock scored 174 runs in 140 balls, which is the highest score by a WK batter in the history of the ODI WC. Against New Zealand, de Kock scored 114 runs in 116 balls.
1. Rohit Sharma
The Indian captain was in sensational form in the 2019 ODI World Cup. In England and Wales, Rohit scored 648 runs in 9 innings and ended the tournament as the highest run scorer. To date, Rohut is the only batter to have scored 5 hundreds in a single edition of the tournament. Three of the five hundreds came in successive innings. Against South Africa, Rohit started the tournament with a game-changing unbeaten 122*(144).
Against Pakistan, Rohit scored 140 runs in 113 balls in Manchester. Against England, Rohit scored 102 runs in 109 balls, chasing a big target of 338 runs. Against Bangladesh, Rohit scored 104 runs in 92 balls in Edgbaston. Against Sri Lanka in Headingley, the Indian opener scored 103 runs in 94 balls, which helped India to secure a 7-wicket win. Interestingly, only one of those 4 hundreds came in a losing cause.
