Match number 28 of the ODI World Cup saw the bottom-placed team, the Netherlands take on Bangladesh at the historical Eeden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. But the match turned out to be a one-sided affair as the minnow Netherlands stamped their authority against the Bangladesh side. The Dutch team thrashed the Bangladesh side by 87 runs. With this win, the Netherlands side has now jumped to the number eight spot and has pushed Bangladesh and England to ninth and tenth position respectively.
Earlier, in the game Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards won the toss and elected to bast first. The decision turned out to be a poor one as they lost both their openers, Vikramjit Singh and Max ODowd, with only 4 runs on the board. However, skipper Scott Edwards once again displayed his batting prowess, although he received limited support from the other end.
Wesley Barresi drawing upon his experience, contributed for a while but was dismissed after scoring 41 runs. Sybrand Engelbrecht managed to stay at the crease with the skipper but was dismissed in the death overs, having contributed 35 runs while attempting to accelerate the scoring. A few powerful hits from Logan van Beek helped push the total past 225. Edwards was the top scorer for the Dutch, delivering a splendid innings of 68 runs.
The Dutch bowling department stepped up
While chasing the target, Bangladesh's batsmen encountered difficulties in finding their rhythm, suffering frequent wicket losses. The batting order saw alterations, including Mehidy Hasan Miraz batting ahead of Najmul Hossain Shanto. Surprisingly, Miraz managed to top the scoring for Bangladesh with 35 runs in the match.
The Dutch bowlers delivered an outstanding performance throughout the innings, with Paul van Meekeren standing out by capturing 4 wickets and conceding only 23 runs in 7.2 overs. Bas de Leede, who had previously endured the worst bowling figures in ODI history against Australia, made a remarkable comeback, securing 2 wickets while giving away just 25 runs in 7 overs. This impressive bowling display propelled the Netherlands to their second victory of the tournament.
Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to this win from the Netherlands:
It's time to reconsider the associate tag. Take it from the Netherlands, who have shown significant improvement in the last two World Cups, and perhaps assign it to Bangladesh, who seem to struggle without visible progress.
