In the match number 27 of the ODI World Cup, 2023 saw the Trans- Tasman rivalry, Australia taking on New Zealand. Also, the rivalry also lived up to the hype as the fans were treated to some amazing ball-striking from both teams. But eventually, one team had to lose and it was New Zealand this time. They came so close to chasing down the total but eventually fell short by just five runs. Australia have now won 4 on the trot, while it is a second successive loss for New Zealand.
Earlier in the day, it was New Zealand skipper, Tom Latham who won the toss and elected to bowl first. The match started with Australia's dynamic opening pair, Travis Head and David Warner, propelled their team to an imposing total of 388 runs. New Zealand had chosen to field first, and from the very beginning, Head and Warner aggressively attacked the boundaries, amassing 118/0 during the initial powerplay. Both batsmen achieved rapid half-centuries, with Head reaching the milestone in a mere 25 balls, closely followed by Warner in 28 deliveries.
The opening duo established a formidable 175-run partnership before Glenn Phillips dismissed Warner, who had compiled an impressive 81 off 65 balls. Shortly after, Head also departed after a remarkable 109 off 67 deliveries. However, Australia faced a minor setback as Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh struggled to maintain the momentum, providing New Zealand with a glimmer of hope for a late resurgence.
Nonetheless, an explosive performance by Maxwell once again tilted the game in Australia's favour. After Maxwell's exit with 41 runs from 24 balls, Josh Inglis contributed 38 runs from 28 deliveries, while Pat Cummins aggressively scored 37 runs from just 14 balls, ensuring Australia concluded their innings with a commanding total.
New Zealand fell short by just five runs
In pursuit of the target, New Zealand's opening pair, Devon Conway and Will Young got off to a good start, forging a 61-run partnership for the first wicket. However, their fortunes took a turn as Conway fell victim to Josh Hazlewood in the 8th over of the second innings. Hazlewood struck again in his next over, dismissing Young.
Neesham made a valiant effort and took the match down to the last ball. Unfortunately, he was run out on the penultimate ball of the match, leaving New Zealand 5 runs short of what could have been a historic victory.

Hard luck for New Zealand. But they have proved that they aren't afraid of any total. Great temperament by them.
