The match number 14 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw five times World Cup winners lock horns against the 1996 World Cup winner Sri Lanka. The match eventually turned out to be a one-sided affair in the end which once looked like a tough game. Australia went on to register their first victory of this edition of the World Cup by five wickets. With this win, the Australian team have opened their account and climbed to the eighth spot while Sri Lanka being in the ninth spot without any victory.

Earlier in the game, the Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis won the toss and elected to bat first citing the chances of dew. Sri Lanka got off to a brilliant start as both the openers, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera played calculated cricket and also scored runs at great pace. The duo stitched a brilliant partnership of 125 runs for the first wicket.

But once the Australia skipper got the wicket of Nissanka, who played brilliantly for his 61 runs, it triggered a domino effect which as wickets kept on tumbling after that. The demolition from the Australian bowlers were such that apart from openers only Charith Asalanka (25) got into double figures and the rest of the players were out in single digits. Sri Lankan innings which was once looking solid at 156/1 and cruising along nicely to get to a score of 300 plus but they eventually ended up getting just 209 runs on board. The Sri Lankan team lost their remaining nine wickets in just 53 runs.

Facing a target of 210, the five-time champions, Australia, showed no fear. Dilshan Madushanka, however, had different plans. Removing Warner and Smith, he applied pressure with two maiden overs. Despite Mitchell Marsh's quick fifty, his run-out tilted the advantage towards Sri Lanka. Labuschagne anchored the innings, while Inglis played freely, guiding Australia to an easy victory. Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell's aggressive contributions ensured a swift win in the 36th over. Australia triumphed with 88 balls remaining and 5 wickets in hand, significantly boosting their squad and net run rate.
