SWOT analysis of Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024

Gujarat Titans (GT) will be playing their first season without Hardik Pandya. The star all-rounder, who led GT to glory in their inaugural season (2022) and the finals the following season, was traded to Mumbai Indians in a massive all-cash trade deal. The Ahmedabad-based franchise then made Shubman Gill their captain and acquired the services of big names like Shahrukh Khan and Umesh Yadav.

GT spent a total of Rs 30.30 crore to buy eight players, their most expensive purchase being Australia's left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson for INR 10 crore. They have formed a 25-man squad and now let's look at their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Strengths: Quality finishers, formidable spin duo 

David Miller and Rahul Tewatia have been excellent finishers for GT in the last two seasons. This time they made a recruit in Shahrukh Khan for Rs 7.40 crore. The Tamil Nadu cricketer is expected to unleash his power hitting in the lower middle order. Another great strength of GT is their spin attack. Rashid Khan is their trump card and he will be assisted by his compatriot Noor Ahmed. 

Weaknesses: Absence of high-profile all-rounders

Hardik Pandya's departure has left their leadership and all-rounder department in question. The team has Rashid Khan, Vijay Shankar, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Rahul Tewatia but lacks a world-class all-rounder. However, with the Impact Player rule in place, the Shubman Gill-led side will get some relief. 

Opportunities: Great chance for new members to prove their mettle

Shahrukh Khan and Spencer Johnson bagged a huge amount from GT in the 2024 IPL auction. The former Punjab Kings (PBKS) star could not live up to the expectations in the last two seasons. He can get a long run with GT with impressive performances. On the other hand, 10-crore purchase Johnson can announce his arrival in the mega league. 

Threats: Captaincy pressure for Gill

Hardik Pandya's departure prompted GT to announce Shubman Gill as their new captain. The youngster has been impressive as a batter in the last two seasons. It will be interesting to see how the opening batter copes with the pressure of captaincy and how it doesn't affect his batting prowess.
