For the past few days, social media has been buzzing about the biggest trade in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Reports and rumours were rife that Gujarat Titans (GT) are set to trade their captain Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians (MI) in an all-cash one-sided trade deal. However, on the deadline day (November 26) for all franchises to announce their retained and released list of players, GT surprised everyone by retaining the star all-rounder.
It was earlier learned that the Mukesh Ambani-owned franchise paid INR 15 crore in addition to an undisclosed transfer fee to secure Pandya's services in IPL 2024. There were also rumours that Pandya would replace Rohit Sharma as captain of MI in the future. However, in a surprising turn of events, Pandya's name is also on GT's list of retained players.
Meanwhile, the trading window closes a week before the auction scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 19. This means Pandya can still be traded to his former franchise. According to reports, even after the auction ends, the trade can take place before the start of the next edition of the cash-rich league.
Pandya was bought by GT in 2022 and given the captaincy of the team. In his first attempt at a leadership role, the batting all-rounder led the Ahmedabad-based franchise to glory. Pandya managed to lead his team to the final in 2023 but lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a thrilling encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
