The 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction is scheduled to be held on December 19 in Dubai. Of the 1,166 players who have registered their interest to play the IPL 2024 season, a total of 333 will go under the hammer. The shortlisted cricketers include 214 Indian cricketers and 119 foreign players, including two players from associate nations.
There are 116 capped and 215 uncapped players in the auction list. The retention deadline has ended and squads and total purse remaining for all 10 franchises are out. Now they are aiming to add impactful players to their roster in the auction. Franchisees can fill a maximum of 77 slots, 30 of which are reserved for overseas players.
Notably, 23 players have registered their names at their highest base price category of INR 2 crores. There are 13 players in the auction list with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore. In this article, we discuss three players from the INR 1.5 crore category who might go unsold in the IPL 2024 mini-auction.
3. Chris Jordan
Chris Jordan has struggled to prove his mettle in the IPL over the years. He has a good record in T20 cricket but failed to replicate the success in the cash-rich league. The 35-year-old has played 34 matches in the league, taking 30 wickets at an average of 35.67 and an economy rate of 9.61. He also could not contribute much with the bat, scoring just 81 runs at a strike rate of 105.19. Jordan represented Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2016 season and joined Mumbai Indians (MI) as a replacement for Jofra Archer in the 2023 edition. It would be surprising if any franchise picks him up at the auction.
2. Tom Curran
Despite not being able to make his mark in the league, the England all-rounder put himself in the INR 1.5 price category. Tom Curran has played 13 IPL matches so far, picking up 13 wickets at an economy rate of 10.84 and scoring 127 runs at a strike rate of 118.69. With the Impact Player rule in place, franchises may go for investing in specialist batters and bowlers.
1. Tymal Mills
Tymal Mills has a good T20 record, having picked up 232 wickets in 194 matches. However, when it came to the IPL, the English pacer struggled to bring out his best. Mills was bought by RCB at the IPL 2017 auction for a whopping sum of Rs 12 crore. However, in return, he could give them only five wickets at an average of 30.60 and an economy rate of 8.57 - proving to be one of the worst signings in the franchise's history.
It took five years for the left-arm seamer to return to the league when MI purchased him ahead of the 2022 season. He failed to shine for them too, claiming six wickets at an economy rate of 11.18, before being ruled out with an ankle injury. The 31-year-old was released by MI and it would be surprising for any franchise to invest in him.
