With each passing the anticipation for the upcoming season of IPL 2024 is creating a buzz. Few of the Indian stars who have been on the shelf will be looking to use this tournament as a vehicle to make their returns.
One such player is Rishabh Pant who hasn’t played cricket for nearly 15 months. The wait is set to be over as the 26-year-old is set to make his comeback with Delhi Capitals. It has been confirmed that Pant will lead the side and play just as a batter. The idea to play Pant as a specialist impact player has also been mooted.
Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has advised against rushing back the youngster to the IPL. According to the 74-year-old, Pant may not be the same player he was before his injury during the IPL 2024 season.
Sunil Gavaskar’s huge advice to Delhi Capitals –
Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar was speaking to Star Sports India about the IPL 2024 season. The legendary former batter has expressed his reservations about Delhi Capitals and Rishabh Pant.
"I'm also a big fan of him. For me the most important thing, is he should be healthy like before, so that he can come and entertain us. It will be very difficult for him and it will take some time for him to get that batting fluency. But good that he has started training” remarked Mr. Gavaskar.
One of the biggest points of concern for Sunil Gavaskar is the knee of Rishabh Pant. This could affect the mobility of Pant if he keeps wickets during the season. The knee plays a pivotal role in batting as well as keeping -- which of course he may not do initially. Maybe he won't be the usual Rishabh Pant that we are used to seeing”
While advising Delhi Capitals, Mr. Gavaskar said “He certainly has the ability to think on his feet. If he gets back to full fitness, the reins of (Delhi Capitals) captaincy should be handed over to him. Let's stay hopeful. This season is first of him coming back to full fitness. Let's not rush him* into doing something that there will be a setback”
Delhi Capitals will open their captain against Punjab Kings on the 23rd of March. The first game of the tournament will witness MS Dhoni and his Chennai side host RCB on the 22nd. Mumbai Indians will travel to Ahmedabad under Hardik Pandya to take on his former side Gujarat Titans. Till now only the first 17 days of the tournament’s schedule have been announced.
