Starc surpassed the record set by Pat Cummins, who was acquired by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 20.5 crore during the same auction on Tuesday. Having previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, the left-arm seamer entered the auction for the 2024 season.

Earlier, Pat Cummins made history in the IPL by being auctioned to the SRH for an impressive Rs 20.4 crore. In a prolonged bidding war with the RCB, SRH successfully secured Cummins for the record amount. This concluded a remarkable season for the Australian player. The SRH were in search of a leader with strong bowling capabilities, which had been lacking in the previous two seasons. Cummins who had a base price of Rs 2 crore, sparked a bidding competition primarily involving the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

Following an initial tussle between Delhi Capitals (DC) and CSK, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and RCB joined the bidding fray for West Indies speedster Alzarri Joseph. Ultimately, RCB emerged victorious, securing the pacer for Rs 11.50 crore. Now ranking as the fourth most expensive player of the day at the IPL Auction 2024, Alzarri Joseph had been released by the GT before the auction.

The Ahmedabad-based team had initially acquired him for Rs 2.4 crore, and he played a crucial role in their 2022 IPL championship, securing 14 wickets in 16 games. In 2019, Joseph served as an injury substitute for the Mumbai Indians (MI) before his two-year contract with GT. Despite an impressive debut, conceding only 12 runs, he managed to take six wickets in three matches for MI, remaining wicketless in two of them.
