Gujarat Titans were dealt a massive blow ahead of the IPL 2024 season. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to his injury. It is to be noted that the fast bowler hasn’t played a game since the 2023 ODI World Cup.
One Indian cricket board source while speaking to a renowned media source said “The injection hasn’t worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for the UK for the surgery. IPL seems out of the question”
In this article, we cast a closer look at who can replace Mohammed Shami for IPL 2024.
5 – Kamlesh Nagarkoti –
Once touted as the player who is set to play for India, Kamlesh Nagarkoti has lost his way. The 24-year-old can bowl at good speeds and Shubman Gill knows his qualities. The two players had shared the dressing room for the India Under-19 team for a long time. The youngster is also more than decent with the bat and can also field well inside and outside the 30-yard circle. If Nagarkoti is picked he can be an ideal Mohammed Shami replacement.
4- KM Asif –
30-year-old KM Asif can bowl at good speeds and has played a few games in the IPL. In 7 games, Asif has picked 7 wickets with a best of 2/33 with his economy on the higher side. Gujarat Titans will want to look at KM Asif as a potential Mohammed Shami replacement. What he lacks in IPL experience, KM Asif can more than make up for it with his extra pace.
3 – Sandeep Warrier
The Tamil Nadu pacer wasn’t picked up in the IPL Auction after being released by the Mumbai Indians. Sandeep Warrier can bowl the heavy bowl but relies more on swing and seam. The right-arm pacer also uses the slower ball to good effect and can bowl a good yorker. With experience and good bowling skills, there is no better Mohammed Shami replacement than Sandeep Warrier.
2- Mohammed Kaif –
In a strange of irony, imagine if Mohammed Shami is replaced by his brother in Gujarat Titans. The 27-year-old has picked 17 wickets for Bengal this season and can bowl the heavy ball. Just like his older sibling, Mohammed Kaif is also known to be a very good exponent of swing bowling at a good pace.
1- Varun Aaron –
One of India’s forgotten pacers, Varun Aaron has just called time on his red-ball career. The 34-year-old will continue to play the white ball formats and hope he gets picked up as Mohammed Shami's replacement option. Varun Aaron hasn’t lost his step and can still clock good speeds with the ball. The veteran pacer also has added a few new tricks up his sleeve with an effective slower ball in his kitty.
