In the IPL 2024 auction held in Dubai on Tuesday, Australian batsman Travis Head secured a lucrative contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad for a substantial sum of Rs. 6.8 crore. The auction unfolded with an intense bidding battle primarily between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sunrisers Hyderabad initiated the bidding for Head, who had earned the prestigious title of Player of the Match in the World Cup semifinals and finals. Chennai Super Kings entered the fray shortly thereafter, leading to a competitive exchange of bids. Eventually, Sunrisers Hyderabad emerged victorious, securing the services of the powerful Australian batsman.
Teams exhibited a strong desire to invest heavily in Travis Head, given his exceptional performance in the ODI World Cup earlier in the year. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Australia's World Cup triumph, scoring a remarkable 137 runs off 120 balls in the final against India. Throughout the tournament, Head amassed 329 runs in six innings at an impressive average of 54.83.
In contrast to the previous year's auction, where he went unsold at a base price of Rs. 2 crore, the current auction witnessed a significant shift in his fortunes, reflecting the heightened demand for his services. Travis Head had previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The renewed interest from teams underscores the recognition of his cricketing prowess and recent stellar performances.
Travis Head’s career at a glance
Travis Head made his debut for South Australia in the 2011-12 season, quickly establishing himself as a promising batsman. He enjoyed success in domestic cricket, representing South Australia in the Sheffield Shield and the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL). Known for his aggressive style of play and ability to score quickly, Head made valuable contributions to his teams.
Making his international debut for Australia in a T20I against India in January 2016, Head later debuted in One Day Internationals (ODIs) against the West Indies in June 2016.
In addition to his batting prowess, Travis Head has taken on leadership roles, serving as the captain of the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL. His continued presence in the Australian national team across formats underscores his significance, contributing consistently with the bat and playing a pivotal role in the middle order for Australia's Test team.
