The veteran Indian batter, Cheteshwar Pujara, is making waves in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 with amazing batting performances. He has amassed a staggering 673 runs in 10 innings at an impressive average of 74.78. His remarkable form has ignited hopes of a comeback for the national team, and Pujara is not letting age become a barrier to his aspirations.
The right-handed batter last donned the Indian jersey during the World Test Championship final in June 2023 against Australia. However, he faced a challenging outing, scoring just 41 runs in two innings. Despite the setback, Pujara has maintained his focus and resilience, showcasing his prowess in the domestic red-ball competition.
In a recent interview, Pujara emphasised the changing dynamics of cricket, citing examples like James Anderson, who, at 41, remains a vital asset for England. Drawing inspiration from tennis legend Novak Djokovic, Pujara confidently stated that "35 is the new 25." His belief in age being just a number is rooted in the evolving fitness standards of modern-day cricketers.
He said, "I genuinely feel that age is just a number (he just turned 36). You have the example of James Anderson, who is bowling fast at 41 and is still England’s best bowler. Novak Djokovic recently said that 35 is the new 25. The dynamics of the game are changing, and players are getting fitter.”
“I don’t think age is any longer a barrier. Particularly for players who play only one format, which I think has helped me immensely. If I am playing only tests, I can maintain my body better. You just have to keep working on your fitness. That holds true even if you are a 25-year-old," he further added.
Will Cheteshwar Pujara make a comeback for the national team?
Pujara's commitment to maintaining peak fitness becomes evident in his strategic approach, focusing solely on Test cricket. This singular focus allows him to manage his body better and adapt to the demands of the longest format. He believes that the age factor is no longer a hindrance, echoing the sentiment that consistent fitness work is essential, regardless of age.
As Saurashtra, Pujara's team, holds the third position in Elite Group A of the Ranji Trophy, their performance has been commendable, with three wins and one loss from six matches. The upcoming match against Manipur provides another opportunity for Pujara to further solidify his case for a national team comeback. His exceptional contributions in the Ranji Trophy not only reflect his individual brilliance but also contribute to Saurashtra's standing in the competition.
Pujara's journey is a testament to his unwavering dedication and belief in his abilities, with each run in the Ranji Trophy acting as a resounding statement of intent. As the cricketing community eagerly watches Pujara's performances, his comeback aspirations add an exciting dimension to his illustrious career.
