A fascinating first day at Visakhapatnam as both India and England are equally in the game. Yashasvi Jaiswal remained the star of the day with an unbeaten century, but England managed to bounce back with three wickets in the final session. India are 336-6 after 93 overs at stumps on Day 1 of the 2nd Test, setting the stage for an engrossing contest at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
The hosts will be disappointed for not taking full advantage of the conditions after winning the toss. All the batters got off to a good start but none could turn it into a big one except Jaiswal. Captain Rohit Sharma was the first to go to the pavilion. The veteran opener was dismissed for 14 (41) by young spinner Shoaib Bashir in the 18th over.
Shubman Gill once again failed to prove his mettle in the format, falling to veteran pacer James Anderson after scoring 34 off 46 balls. Shreyas Iyer also failed to capitalize on a good start as Tom Hartley dismissed the right-hander for 27 off 59 balls. Rajat Paditar made his debut impressive, scoring 32 off 72 balls. The 30-year-old looked solid at the crease until getting out to Rehan Ahmed in a very unfortunate fashion.
Jaiswal eyes maiden Test double ton on Day 2
Rehan and Bashir chipped in two more wickets - Axar Patel and Srikar Bharat - in the final session to help England be in the hunt despite the pitch not offering much turn for the spinners. Jaiswal stood tall as the rest struggled to find resistance. The southpaw, who missed out on a well-deserved century in the last match, compensated this time with a brave knock.
Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 179 off 257 balls with 17 fours and 5 sixes to single-handedly put India in command. The young lad will resume the innings alongside Ravichandran Ashwin (5* off 10 balls) and will aim to notch up his maiden double ton.
Speaking after the first day's match, Jaiswal said: "I wanted to play it session by session. When they were bowling well, I just wanted to get through that spell. Initially, the wicket was damp and there was spin and bounce, with a bit of seam. However, I wanted to convert the loose balls, and play till the end. I would love to double this up, and play till the end for the team. Rahul sir and Rohit bhai kept giving me the confidence and told me to convert this into a big innings, and stay till the end."
