During a discussion on 'Match Centre Live' following the conclusion of the first Test against England in Hyderabad, Anil Kumble, former Indian cricketer and expert for JioCinema and Sports18, addressed Shubman Gill's challenges and offered insights on how he can regain form, stating. Kumble suggests that Shubman Gill should play with more freedom and concentrate on scoring runs.

The legendary leg spinner also added that it's essential for Gill to devise his own strategy to tackle spin, particularly given his inclination to play with a firm grip. This approach is particularly effective on pitches that offer good batting conditions and where fast bowlers are the main threat. He mentioned that in conditions where the ball is turning slowly, players need to utilize their hands to control and temper their shots. Kumble even touched upon the fact that the talismanic batter needs to focus on improving.

The spin wizard even emphasized the importance of varying one's approach based on the conditions, rather than sticking to a single method all the time. The former India skipper also questioned whether it's possible to improve one's skills within just four days before the next Test, suggesting that mindset plays a crucial role. The 53-year-old spinner also expressed confidence in Rahul Dravid's ability to guide Gill in managing his mindset effectively.

Kumble highlighted Gill's privileged position in the team, comparing it to Cheteshwar Pujara's. Gill's shift to the opener's slot after the World Test Championship final indicates his desire to bat at No. 3. Kumble stressed the need for Gill to refine his skills, especially in Vizag, to alleviate pressure. Despite acknowledging Gill's talent and learning process, Kumble emphasized the importance of adapting to the demands of batting in crucial positions, particularly in Indian conditions.

“He has been given the cushion perhaps even a Cheteshwar Pujara didn’t get, because although he (Pujara) has played over 100 Tests, I keep coming back to him mainly because that was his place not too long ago. Pujara played in that World Test Championship final and post that, it’s been Shubman Gill, who’s been moving from the opener’s slot, and he himself wanted to bat at No. 3. So, when you want to bat at No. 3 especially in India because you have that talent, you certainly need to work on your game. He has the skills, he is young and he’s learning, but he needs to do it in Vizag, otherwise, the pressure will be on him.”
