The clock controversy in the semi-final of women’s hockey during the CWG 2022 between India and Australia, is taking a bigger loop now. The Federation of International Hockey has to come up with a clarification regarding the same. The apex governing body of hockey has apologized for the clock issue that happened in the semi-final which obviously went in favor of the Australian team.

It was the time in the match when both teams were locking horns in the penalty shoot-out as the match ended in a draw after the end of full-time. Although the FIH has assured of a ‘thorough review’ of this whole incident.

Australian player Rosie Malone missed her first attempt at the start of the penalty shoot-out. But the referee went on to gift her another chance with a reason clock’s misfunctioning. The countdown for the shoot had not started on the scoreboard in the stadium. Eventually, this decision helped Malone, and she capitalized on it during the second chance by converting it into a goal.

Indian side lost the match with a score line of 0-3 against the Hockeyroos. Although, fans witnessed a tough between both the teams during all four quarters of the match. The fans who were there in the stadium booed the technical staff for this controversial decision.

Following all this, as the controversy started to become a talk of the town in the sporting fraternity, FIH had to intervene to clear their stand on it.

In the semi-final match of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games between Australia and India (Women), the penalty shoot-out started mistakenly too early (the clock was not yet ready to operate), for which we apologize,” FIH was quoted as saying in the official statement.

“The process in place for such situations is that the penalty shoot-out has to be retaken, which was done. We will thoroughly review the incident in order to avoid any similar situations in the future,” FIH added later.
