After almost 20 years, one of the best fps shooter games by Valve, Half-Life 2 is set to receive a modern touch. A community-made Half-Life 2 RTX project is on its way to provide a modern remake of the game.

As per the reveal at CES 2024, the upcoming patchy is being developed through Nvidia's RTX Remix modding platform. While a visual overhaul is the main talk, the game is also set to receive various bug fixes and general improvements.

The RTX overhaul is being developed by Orbifold Studios. The game was already considered a visual masterpiece when it was released back in 2004. With the new patch, players will be able to fully utilise their graphics cards to enjoy a modern Half-Life 2.

What is coming with the update?

Since the graphics were already considered great, the trailer shows how good the game looks when paired with Ray Tracing. It gives the game a new, ominous look. Sadly, players will need an RTX-supported card to enjoy the Ray Tracing.

On a more technical side, players will see support for the Vulkan rendering API that will provide better support for Steam Deck users. Player FOV is also now capped at 110. In a sense, the project is planned to be much more than just eye candy.

Currently, there is no planned release date for the patch as it needs more optimization. However, the game does look pretty good. Gamers are only hoping that it won’t have a similar performance issue as the Portal RTX did during launch, leaving many players dry.

This is not the first time a Valve game has received such an overhaul. Portal series back in 2022 also received an RTX overhaul, although many complained that it was not properly optimized and regularly crashed.
