While it remains uncertain whether a definitive contract has been formalized, Motorsport.com has gathered that discussions are in an advanced phase and may reach a conclusion by the week's end. Ferrari has expressed longstanding interest in Hamilton's talents. However, previous attempts were rebuffed as the seven-time champion believed Mercedes provided a more promising path to success.
Moreover, recent developments suggest that following two difficult seasons for Mercedes, Ferrari is on the verge of persuading Hamilton that it offers a more promising future. Hamilton inked a multi-year deal with Mercedes for 2024 and 2025 last year, but it seems the latter season may have been contingent.
This implies an exit clause for Hamilton, allowing him to potentially join Ferrari in 2025. Neither Ferrari nor Mercedes have provided comment on the matter. It is a huge setback not only for the company but also for the fans who have been witnessing the legendary racer associated with the company for quite some time now in Formula One.
Huge blow for Mercedes
If Hamilton's transfer is finalized, it will deal a significant blow to Mercedes, which underwent extensive contract talks with him last year to retain his services for the current season. Shortly after the agreement was reached, Hamilton emphasized his belief that Mercedes had learned from the setbacks of the 2022/2023 seasons and had an opportunity to reclaim success with its revamped car for this year's campaign.
Moreover, when questioned by Motorsport.com at last year's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix about any doubts regarding returning to the forefront, he replied negatively and said that it would not be during negotiations. In addition, the reason behind a potential shift in Hamilton's commitment to Mercedes, where he was anticipated to conclude his Formula 1 career, remains uncertain.
“I do have faith that we will get there, we have been here before as a team, and while we have more and more new people, we still have great value, I see great focus within everyone. I think for this year [2023] they thought the fundamentals were good and we just have to go here and it’s not the case. That’s why I was frustrated in February because they hadn’t made the changes I’d asked (for). But with the changes we are making, I hope I was, I hope we are right and, yeah, but I guess we have no idea what the Red Bulls are going to do,” he said.
