On 22 July, Inter Miami took on Cruz Azul in their first game of the Leagues Cup at the DRV PNK stadium in Florida. However, all eyes were on Lionel Messi if he would make his debut for the MLS side in the clash. Even, there were chances of Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, Sergio Busquets making his debut also for the club.

Before the clash, while speaking to Argentina’s ESPN futbol 12, the Miami coach, Tata Martino said: “From what I have seen up to now they are going fit to play and it is likely that on Friday they can be there. Whether that will be as starters or coming in at the half, we will have to make that decision yet, but as I see it, Leo as well as Busi can play.”

Lionel Messi scored the winner as Inter Miami defeated Cruz Azul by 2-1 

Speaking of the match, both Messi and Busquets started the match on the bench. But, the first half went in favour of Miami as they took a lead of 1-0. In the 44th minute, Robert Taylor scored a fantastic goal from the edge of the box while Robbie Robinson provided the assist. Then, the Inter Miami fans went crazy when Messi and Busquests made their debut for the club in the 53rd minute. However, in the 65th minute, Cruz Azul came up with an equaliser, thanks to Uriel Antuna while Jesus Duenas provided the assist. After that, both teams were looking for a winner but failed to breach the final third until the 90+4’th minute. 

Messi got fouled at the edge of the box and Miami were awarded a free-kick. The Argentine star did not disappoint his new club fans as he stepped up and slotted it to the top left corner to give a 2-1 lead in the dying minutes. After the goal, several celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Serena Williams were in awe. The co-owner of Inter Miami, David Beckham was also seen emotional while celebrating the goal as the video has gone viral. Finally, the match ended in favour of Miami with a scoreline of 2-1 and thus, they bagged three points in their League Cups opener.
