On 7 December 2022, Portugal took on Switzerland in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. It was the eighth encounter of the Round of 16 that took place in Lusail Stadium. Speaking of forms, Portugal were coming off after getting the top spot in Group H. They gathered six points in three games.

In the last match, they lost to South Korea by a scoreline of 2-1. On the other hand, Switzerland finished the group stage in the second spot in Group G. So, the stage was set for an enthralling encounter for fans. However, Cristiano Ronaldo started the game on the bench as he missed the final playing XI.

Portugal started the game with more intensity than Switzerland. As a result, they got the early lead in the 17th minute. Goncalo Ramos scored the goal while Joao Felix assisted him. It was a thunderous strike from Ramos and the Swiss goalkeeper, Yann Sommer had no answer to it. With this goal, he became the youngest player to score in a knockout game in the World Cup for Portugal.
Then, in the 33rd minute, Pepe scored the second goal for Portugal from a corner. Bruno Fernandes delivered a beautiful ball into the box which Pepe met with a thumping header. After that, Ramos had a chance to score his brace in the 42nd minute. But, Sommer came up with a huge save to deny him. Thus, the first half ended 2-0. In the second half, Ramos made it 3-0 for Portugal in the 51st minute. It was a cheeky finish from the young striker while Diogo Dalot came up with a classy delivery into the box.
Then, in the 55th minute, Raphael Guerreiro scored the fourth goal for Portugal while Goncalo Ramos came up with the assist. However, Switzerland responded quickly when Manual Akanji scored the first goal for his country in the 58th minute. But, Ramos completed his hat trick in the 67th minute while Joao Felix assisted him again. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo came as a sub in the 73rd minute. Then, in 90+2' minutes, Rafael Leao scored a fantastic goal to make it 6-1 while Raphael Guerreiro came up with another assist. Finally, the game ended 6-1 in favor of Portugal and they stormed into the Quarter-finals.
