Argentina and Netherlands happened to be involved in one of the most controversial matches in the FIFA World Cup 2022 when both teams locked horns in the quarter-finals. The match witnessed a lot of things other than the action of the match between the two heavyweights of the footballing world.
One of the major concerns that became a headache for the officials was the discipline that was not followed by either of the teams at the end of the match. The players of both sides lost their tempers which also involved the backroom staff of both Argentina and the Netherlands.
This utter lack of discipline forced referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz to come up with a total of 16 yellow cards in the match. Apart from this, things might go a bit tougher for the Argentine skipper Lionel Messi as FIFA has initiated the disciplinary proceeding against him.
Following the conclusion of the game with Argentina’s win, the winning captain and senior right winger Lionel Messi went on to criticize referees, he was also accompanied by his fellow teammate and goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
Here's what Messi said about the referees:
“I don’t want to talk about referees because then they will sanction you, but we were scared before the game because we knew what was coming
In the aftermath of these remarks from Messi, FIFA came up with a strict stand on the same issue and cleared the air over the possibilities of disciplinary action against the 35-year-old.
“The game featured multiple mass confrontations and heated exchanges as the Dutch came back from two goals down to force extra time. The charges against the Argentina football federation relate to player and staff misconduct and “order and security at matches,” said the apex football governing body in a statement.
